We began this year's Social Studies by discussing historical events that we know and/or have heard about. Students 'pop-corned' their thoughts and came up with a great list ranging from the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Greece, World Wars, the advancement of medicine and technology, women's right to vote, the first African-American President, the Underground Railway (just to name just a few).

In groups students discussed these key question and how they related to the historical events they listed.

-What piece of history are you interested in learning?

-Why Is history important?

-What do we learn from studying the past?

We followed small group presentations of our thinking/answers with these two videos.

VIDEO: What is History For?

VIDEO: Why Study History (this video was a creation made by students).
